NEWARK - Reports say shots were fired during an attempted carjacking involving an off-duty police lieutenant in Newark.

The incident happened early Tuesday morning on Springfield and Charlton Street when the lieutenant was rear-ended and ambushed by a group of armed men.

Reports say the suspects tried to carjack and shoot at the officer, before getting away in a white four-door BMW.

One of the suspects Royce Dedeaux, 24, is hospitalized and several others are on the lam.

Police Director Samuel DeMaio says anyone making bogus complaints will be charged - and he'd like to see state lawmakers to pass tougher penalties for filing a false police report.
