The Essex County Prosecutor's office says 24-year-old Royce Dedeaux, of Newark, was charged with conspiracy, robbery and weapons offenses after the early morning incident yesterday.

Officials say the officer, whose name wasn't disclosed, was stopped at a red light near Springfield and Charlton streets in his personal vehicle when two men bumped his car from behind. They then pulled a gun on him when he stepped out to inspect the damage.

The officer identified himself and used his service weapon to exchange gunfire with the suspects, who fled in his vehicle.

Dedeaux was later was dropped off at Beth Israel Hospital with a gunshot wound.
