Ocean County Sheriff K9 Jack goes missing (12/24/13)

HOWELL - The Ocean County Sheriff's Department reported that its K-9 officer Jack has been found safe.

The 1-year-old brown Chesapeake Bay retriever went missing Monday afternoon in Allaire State Park. Police say the dog ran away during training exercises after chasing a deer he had spotted in the woods. The park borders parts of Wall and Howell townships.

Authorities say Jack was found in the middle of a nearby freeway. He had allegedly crossed Route 195 three times.

The incoming Ocean County sheriff says he wants a review of how the dog escaped. The department is now considering putting GPS trackers on all police K-9s.
