NEWARK - The Occupy Wall Street movement tried to gain a foothold in downtown Newark as protesters moved in Friday. A group of about 30 occupied Military Park in downtown Newark beginning at about 3 p.m. For every protester seeking economic justice, there was a police officer swarming the perimeter. Law enforcement officials say they didn't know what size crowd to anticipate.
The demonstrators say they are protesting issues that are unique to Newark. The city has a 15 percent unemployment rate and 25 percent of the population lives below the poverty level.
