NYPD's top-secret file on Muslims examined

NEWARK - Hundreds of pages of top-secret information from the NYPD have been obtained by News 12 New Jersey.

The documents reveal that the department tracked businesses owned and visited by those groups and others including Moroccans, Pakistanis.

In the file, the NYPD admits tracking second- and third-generation Syrian-Americans, families that, in some cases, have been in the U.S. for decades. There are direct references to Paterson as a place of interest with a large Syrian population.

Demographics listed by the NYPD rank New Jersey in the top five states for Muslim populations. Cities like Hoboken, Jersey City, Bayonne and Paterson are listed as population centers that could have been watched.

An NYPD spokesperson says Newark police were aware of the surveillance, but Newark Police director Samuel Demaio has denied that.
