NUTLEY - Officials say they've hired a company to spray a Nutley park with a grape-scented chemical used to repel birds.

The chemical, used to flavor grape sodas and candies, will be sprayed in DeMuro Park in an affect to rid the park of birds that neighbors say have become a huge issue.

They say thousands of starlings have become noisy and make a huge mess, impacting their quality of life.

"They squawk day and night at times," says Robert Pavone. "You couldn't even have children running around playing in the yard or the street because of the bird poop that they left all over the place."

Nutley has sent notices to residents telling them the chemical is safe but to stay out of the park while the aerosol is being applied.

The application process is set to begin Monday and continue for five days.
