EDISON - A random drug testing plan in a northern New Jersey school district has prompted a lawsuit by concerned parents.

The plan, still under consideration in the Northern Valley Regional High School District, would require testing for students who participate in extracurricular activities, those who park on campus and those who opt in. It would apply to the district's two high schools.

Parents say the district failed to provide enough information, as well as statistics they requested on the issue. Parents add that the district's research is flawed and that it contradicts their own findings on random drug testing.

Administrators say the policy is not meant to be punitive, but rather to give parents resources if their children are found to be using drugs.

Superintendent Christopher Nagy says he successfully implemented a random drug testing policy in his previous district.

The school board is scheduled to vote on the policy in January.
