ASBURY PARK - Check-Mate in Asbury Park provides assistance to people in need of help with paying their utility bills and weatherizing their homes, but now needs some help of its own.

The group says it needs help since the state has put much of the Monmouth County agency's funding on hold.

The director of Check-Mate, Georgia Berry, says she was forced to lay off nearly 40 employees in her weatherization department five weeks ago after the state cut funding to the program in August.

Employees that remain haven't received their last three paychecks. Leslie Toby, of Asbury Park, who relies on their help to pay her heat and electric bills, wonders how long they can work for free.
