SOUTH ORANGE - A major construction project in South Orange is a welcome sight, but not a welcome sound.

Many locals are happy to see the development, but not so happy to hear it. Business owners say the sound of pile driving sends customers running.

Construction began last month on what officials say will be a mixed-use development. The work is happening at a site that has been vacant for close to a decade.

Businesses hope that the constant banging now, is a small price to pay new customers down the road.

The entire project should be done in 12 to 18 months.
