NEWARK - The New Jersey Devils have canceled pre-season games amid ongoing labor disputes between the league and the players union.

For businesses near the Prudential Center, known as the Rock, a lockout from last year's Stanley Cup finalists means drastic cuts in revenue. Many find the prospect of losing so much business daunting, especially coming off of last year's NBA lockout with no action from the then-New Jersey Nets.

The last NHL work stoppage lasted just a season so surrounding businesses are hopeful that the lockout will end before another season is lost.

The NHL and the players union will continue discussions throughout the weekend. For now, the Devils' first regular season home game is set to be played as scheduled two weeks from tomorrow.
