NJ voters hand primary victories to incumbents

EDISON - New Jersey voters have handed all 18 incumbent state legislators who faced primary challenges the right to run again in the November general election.

Two Republican Assembly primaries in northern New Jersey are too close to call. Both races pit two slates of Republicans against each other for nominations for a pair of Assembly seats in heavily Democratic districts.

In the 34th District, GOP Strong's Donna Puglisi and organization-supported William Connolly were slightly ahead of establishment-backed Rhiana Tavarez and GOP Strong's James Challice late Tuesday night.

In the 35th District, the party organization's Joan Salensky and GOP Strong's Steve Farrell were ahead of the party organization's Rick Farfan and GOP Strong's Randy Colondres.

Two of New Jersey's most influential Democrats have survived their primary challenges. Sen. Ray Lesniak and Assemblyman Joe Cryan fended off challenges from a slate of candidates affiliated with the Elizabeth Board of Education.

Richard Kanka has won an uncontested Republican primary for a state Senate seat in a district near Trenton. Kanka is the father of Megan Kanka -- whose slaying by a convicted sex offender led to Megan's Laws in New Jersey and other states.

Nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis has won an uncontested Democratic primary in a New Jersey state Senate race. He still has legal hurdles ahead before he can appear on the general election ballot in November against incumbent Republican state Senator Dawn Marie Addiego.
