TRENTON - (AP) - New Jersey's lowest-paid workers will be getting a raise in January and then one each September after voters approved a state constitutional amendment to raise the minimum wage.

The new $8.25 hourly minimum is $1 higher than the current rate and will go into effect Jan. 1.

Cost-of-living adjustments will automatically occur every September.

About 50,000 workers in New Jersey get minimum wage, or about 3 percent of the workforce. That number doesn't include those who get paid less because they rely on commissions or tips.

Eighteen states and Washington, D.C., currently have higher rates than New Jersey. New Jersey will move into the top 10 with the increase.

Voters also approved a measure to let veterans' groups pay operating expenses with revenue from games of chance.
