NJ Transit wants to raise parking fees

NEWARK - (AP) - Commuters might have to pay more to use NJTransit parking lots.

The agency wants to raise fees by as much as $1 a day at aboutthree dozen of its 140 bus and train stations lots beginning Feb.1.

NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett-Hackett tells TheStar-Ledger of Newark the increase is needed to pay for theoperation and maintenance of the lots.

Fees at many of the parking lots have not increased in more thanfive years. The increase would come in the wake of fare hikes andservice cuts that occurred in May.

Bassett-Hackett says NJ Transit hopes to determine by the end ofthe year which lots where fares would go up.
