NJ Transit has confirmed that it is not only watching what's happening on board light rail trains, but it is starting to record what people are saying.
"The goal of having security systems throughout the transit system is to provide a safe and secure environment for all customers," it said.
An NJ Transit spokesman says the recordings are currently only on the River Line. Soon, it will be on the Hudson-Bergen Line and the Newark Light Rail. It is not on NJ Transit trains.
NJ Transit says the surveillance is helpful to police investigating crime on trains plus "the on-board surveillance systems are also a deterrent for crime and unruly behavior."
While some riders are against it, others support the new measure.
Exactly how long NJ Transit is holding onto those conversations is unclear.
