FLEMINGTON - New Jersey teachers are digging into their pockets to stock their classrooms with supplies for the fast-approaching school year.

News 12 New Jersey spoke to fourth-grade teacher Melanie Vitale, who is buying school supplies not covered by her school stipend. Vitale says that the school gave her $450 last year to purchase supplies and this year it went down to $350.

Vitale says in past years, she's usually spent around $200 of her own money on school supplies for her classroom. When Staples found out that News 12 New Jersey would be shopping there, the store gave her a $150 merchandise card to cover her shopping spree.
