TRENTON - (AP) - A lawyer for New Jersey's at-risk studentssays thousands of children are being deprived of an adequateeducation because of state aid cuts. David Sciarra of the Education Law Center in Newark, which suedon behalf of struggling students, told the state Supreme Court onWednesday that the state should have to fully fund the formula forpublic school aid created in 2008. Former state Supreme Court justice Peter Verniero, whorepresented the state, said the cuts were necessary due to direstate budget conditions. He said they took education populationsinto account: Districts with the most at-risk children received thesmallest reduction in state aid. The proposed state budget would have to be reworked if the courtorders more education funding in the next school year. AP wire services contributed to this report.
