PATERSON - A New Jersey soldier stationed in Georgia and killed during a confrontation with an intruder in his off-post home was remembered by friends and family in Paterson Tuesday.
U.S. Army Spc. Jeremias Ortiz, 26, was stationed at Fort Stewart and living with his wife in an apartment in Hinesville, Ga. Police say an armed intruder entered his home on June 1. Ortiz allegedly confronted the man, and they exchanged gunfire.
Ortiz, a former Passaic High School student, was fatally shot.
The suspect, Kyle Perry, 21, was wounded and was arrested when he went to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.
Perry is charged with murder, aggravated assault, burglary, and other charges.
Ortiz will be buried at East Ridgelawn Cemetery in Clifton on Wednesday with full military honors.
