NJ Senate fails to undo any Christie budget cuts

For the second day in a row, Democrats in the state Senate have fallen short of the votes they need to override any of Governor

TRENTON - For the second day in a row, Democrats in the state Senate have fallen short of the votes they need to override any of Governor Chris Christie's state budget vetoes.

Votes to restore funding for distressed cities, college tuition assistance and after-school programs all failed on party lines. Democrats needed three Republicans to join them to overturn Christie's vetoes.

Monday's votes to undo cuts to child abuse services, women's health clinics, legal aid and other safety-net programs also fell short.

Christie cut $1.3 billion in spending, including $900 million in Democrat add-ins, before signing the $29.7 billion budget.
