TRENTON - (AP) - The New Jersey Senate has approved a $30.6 billion state budget drafted by the Democratic majority.

But Republicans insist the proposal is unconstitutional becauseit relies on more revenue than the state is likely to collect.

The vote Wednesday afternoon was 23 to 15. No Republicans votedfor it, and the state Treasurer says Gov. Chris Christie won't signit.

A balanced budget must be adopted and signed by Friday. If not,the government technically runs out of money and would shut down.

Christie proposed a more modest budget in February that is about$1 billion less than the Democrats' plan. The Democrats' plan addsfunding for public schools, the working poor and crime-fightinginitiatives.

The Assembly is due to consider the budget later Wednesday.
