PRINCETON JUNCTION - New Jersey has seen a spike in the number of train fatalities over the past year.

An Amtrak train struck and killed a pedestrian yesterday near the Hamilton station.

In October, two teens were killed by a train on an overpass on Route 46 in Wayne. The following day, a 13-year-old died after ducking under the railroad gates in Garfield. In all, 20 people have been killed by trains on the state's rails this year.

Research conducted by News 12 New Jersey shows that NJ Transit has consistently had higher fatality rates than nearby railroads.

Federal railroad officials say unlike some other states, New Jersey has thousands of miles of easily accessible tracks, sometimes running right through towns.

The state's Department of Transportation and NJ Transit have set up a committee to look into making the tracks safer.
