NJ's largest standardbred breeder starts to sell horses

CREAM RIDGE - The state's largest standardbred horse breeder is going to be selling off more than 200 horses next week at a going-out-of-business sale in Harrisburg, Pa.

Peretti Farms in Cream Ridge is putting everything up for sale after 25 years in the Garden State. Anthony Perretti, the owner's son and general manager, says without slot machines and gambling at the Meadowlands, his company can't compete with Pennsylvania and New York.

The 400-acre farm is now for sale, making the days numbered for most of its 40 or so workers.

Local businesses such as Rick's Saddle Shop, where Perretti Farms buys its hay, feed and horse supplies, will also suffer.
