EDISON - Singer Wyclef Jean, a longtime New Jersey resident who was born in Haiti, has announced he is running for president of the island nation.

Wyclef appeared on Larry King Live to announce his candidacy for president of Haiti. He says his decision was sparked by the devastation that January's earthquake left behind.

Residents told News 12 New Jersey they are cautious about supporting the singer and they aren't sure if Wyclef knows what he is getting himself into.

Wyclef is expected to form a new political party called Together We Are the Strength.
