EDISON - New Jersey parents are having mixed reactions to a story out of Colorado where a teacher told a 4-year-old girl that she was not allowed to eat her Oreo cookies.

A note was sent home with preschooler Natalee Pearson from the teacher telling her parents to send healthy sneaks with her in her lunchbox.

The story is gaining national attention. New Jersey parents who spoke to News 12 New Jersey had a wide variety of opinions about how much say a teacher should have regarding snacks.

“I think it’s kind of ridiculous,” says Katie Derrick, of Jersey City. “I think it should be a parent’s job.”

Diane Weibel agrees. "I could understand trying to educate parents on nutrition, however monitoring lunch boxes is an absurd waste of teacher resources.”

However, not everyone thinks the teacher overstepped her boundaries.

"I think it's great,” says Tiffany Bates, of Jersey City. “I think kids need to eat healthier lunches.”

A spokeswoman with Aurora Public Schools in Colorado says that Natalee was given a healthy snack to replace the cookies.
