POINT PLEASANT - (AP) - New Jersey officials are urgingboaters and personal watercraft users to be safe and sober on thewater this summer.
Motor Vehicle Commission Chairman Raymond Martinez and StatePolice Marine Unit Chief Dennis Tully made their safety pitchThursday in Point Pleasant on the eve of the July 4th holidayweekend.
Martinez emphasized that personal watercraft such as Jet Skisare regulated just like boats. Operators must be at least 16 yearsold and have a boat license of endorsement. That means they have tohave passed a boating safety course.
So far this year, New Jersey State Police have logged 17 boatingaccidents, including two fatalities.
There were 116 boating accidents reported last year, includingeight fatalities.
