NJ man arrested in softball player's death

SOUTHAMPTON - (AP) - Authorities in southern New Jersey have charged a 28-year-old Florence man with murder in the death of a woman whose body was discovered on a soccer field in Southampton Township.

Steven Headley was arrested Tuesday in the killing of 22-year-old Nicole Ayres, of Deptford, a former high school softball star.

Her body was found Monday. She'd been stabbed multiple times.

Authorities say the killing is believed to have occurred early Monday, but released nothing further on the circumstances.

Headley is being held under guard at a Trenton hospital. Authorities say he's being treated for broken bones suffered when he was hit by a pickup truck Monday night after running out of his mother's house in Pemberton Township and into the road.

Bail is set at $750,000.
