TRENTON - Restrictions could soon be placed on sales of cough medicines containing dextromethorphan, or DM, in New Jersey.

State lawmakers have advanced legislation to make it illegal to sell those medicines to anyone under 18. If the law is passed, pharmacies would have to keep the cough medicines behind the counter.DM is the active ingredient in more than 100 over-the-counter cough medicines, including NyQuil and Robitussin. DM is abused by some as a recreational drug, officials say.

Fines for selling DM to minors would be up to $1,000 if the law is enacted.
