NJ GOP lawmaker quit over wife's Carl Lewis email

TRENTON - (AP) - A Republican official says a freshman NewJersey lawmaker resigned because his wife sent "an offensive andracist" email to the Democratic state Senate campaign of nine-timeOlympic gold medalist Carl Lewis.

Burlington County Republican Chairman Bill Layton acknowledgedMonday that Pat Delany stepped down from the Assembly this monthbecause of his wife's missive to Lewis' campaign.

Jennifer Delany's email said, "Imagine having dark skin andname recognition and the nerve to think that equaled knowingsomething about politics."

Layton says Pat Delany decided to leave office to shield hischildren from "a hurtful and embarrassing public spectacleinvolving their mother." Delaney says he's sorry.

Lewis and Republicans have been fighting over whether he meetsthe state's residency requirement for candidates. He has lived inTexas and California.
