EDISON - Colleges and universities are required by the Federal Clery Act to report crime statistics and make them available online, and News 12 New Jersey took a look at crime on New Jersey campuses.

Data from the U.S. Department of Education shows Rutgers, Rowan, Montclair and Kean Universities all reported various crimes on campus in 2013. The numbers were down from the previous year.

The most frequent offense across the board was burglary, with Rutgers reporting 75 of them in 2013. Rowan reported 17, Montclair reported 46 and Kean reported six. Forcible sex offenses and aggravated assaults rounded out the top three offenses.

Most colleges and universities do offer campus safety and security programs and often work with local police to help solve any reported crimes.
