WEEHAWKEN - It's bitter cold in New Jersey.

Temperatures in the single digits are combining with blustery winds to make it feel like it is well below zero across the state.

A wind chill advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Officials warn the very cold temperatures and strong winds could lead to hypothermia and frostbite to exposed skin in a short period of time.

If you must head out in the cold weather today, here are some winter weather safety tips from the NJ Office of Emergency Management.

In order to protect the safety of our staff, News 12 New Jersey has instructed reporters and their crews to remain inside as much as possible for their reports today. News 12 New Jersey encourages everyone to do their part to stay safe during this dangerous weather.

NJ Transit says it is cross-honoring tickets systemwide today and tomorrow. All NJ Transit rail station buildings and waiting rooms will remain open, including evenings and overnight, through Thursday, January 9.

Dozens of schools in the state delayed their openings for several hours.
