TRENTON (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie's administration has told New Jersey's top state court that it is appealing last week's lower-court ruling that the state must allow gay couples to marry.

Acting Attorney General John Hoffman said in a letter on Monday that the state wants the New Jersey's Supreme Court to take up the matter because of its "far-reaching implications."

Appeals would usually be heard first by an appellate court.

Hoffman also says he is asking the judge who made last week's ruling to delay the Oct. 21 implementation date until the appeal is decided.

Christie said hours after Friday's ruling that he intended to appeal. Democrats had called for the state Supreme Court to fast-track a decision so same-sex couples would know whether they could tie the knot in New Jersey.
