Newark teen drowns in Long Beach hotel pool

LONG BEACH, Calif. - (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old NewJersey girl on a field trip to Southern California has died in anapparent drowning in a hotel pool.

Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Steve Yamamoto saysShaunakaye Williams was unresponsive when friends pulled her fromthe water Friday night at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown LongBeach.

Emergency responders attempted to revive her but detected nopulse. The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Williams, a junior at Newark's West Side High School, was intown with classmates to compete in a regional robotics competition.Her mother, Paula Watson, told The Star-Ledger of Newark that herdaughter could not swim.

Los Angeles County coroner's officials were scheduled to performan autopsy on Sunday.
