NEWARK - Newark officials have submitted their plan to lay off hundreds of city workers to the state Civil Service Commission this week.

According to officials, nearly 1,000 city jobs will be eliminated through layoffs and attrition within the next two years.

Among the layoffs, 167 police officers and 96 firefighter jobs could be cut.

Union officials have encouraged Newark residents to complain to Mayor Cory Booker about the layoffs.

The Civil Service Commission has 30 days to approve the proposal.
