Newark's new top cop addresses critics

NEWARK - The mayor of Newark has said a successful summer could mean Acting Police Director Samuel DeMaio will get the position permanently, but the city's new top cop is not without critics.

DeMaio is among several people named in a lawsuit filed by two former Newark cops, who allege a hostile work environment, wrongful termination and sexual harassment.

"I guess anyone who is terminated is going to feel that they were terminated wrongfully," DeMaio said, in an exclusive interview with News 12 New Jersey.

The ACLU is also calling for the release of DeMaio's disciplinary record.

Mayor Cory Booker has nicknamed DeMaio 'Hellboy,' after the red-faced, demonic comic book character. DeMaio says he liked the nickname until it began evoking a negative connotation. Newark mayor names interim police director
