Newark Police try a new tactic to thwart violence

Police in Newark's South Ward moved their roll call from the precincts to the streets Friday night. Their hope was that a show of force

NEWARK - Police in Newark's South Ward moved their roll call from the precincts to the streets Friday night. Their hope was that a show of force would discourage violence and crime.

The new tactic is part of the city's Safe Summer program. It includes bringing back neighborhood foot patrols, and even bicycle and motorcycle divisions. Police are joined by the Essex County Sheriff's department, and members of SCORE or, Summer Crime Operations Resource Enforcement.

Residents are taking notice of this show of force and most welcome any help they can get.
