NEWARK - Police are searching for the gunman who killed two people and wounded three others when several shots were fired at a car outside a Newark restaurant.

Officers responded to the shooting in broad daylight, at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near Springfield and Fairmount Avenues in the city's West Ward.

Investigators believe one of the five people was the target, and the others were caught in the gunfire.

Police are trying to determine if deceased victim Akbar Muhammad was the target. The Newark resident has past arrests for weapons, aggravated assault and other charges. He is the son of a well-known imam in Newark.

A woman was the second person killed. The three other victims were all hospitalized in stable condition, but the nature of their injuries has not been released.

One area resident who wants her identity withheld is worried violence in her neighborhood is out of control. "Why?" she says. "This is where we all live. It's like we're killing each other."
