Newark police recover high-powered weapon at site of shooting

NEWARK - Newark police have recovered a high-powered weapon at the Kemsco housing complex, where a shooting took place Monday, sending multiple people to the hospital.

A police investigation has led to the arrest of a suspect. Residents are glad to see the police presence, but also say it should have been here already.

The weapon was secured at the Kemsco apartments from a suspect who was getting out of a Toyota. Police say they asked the man if he owned the car, and when he said no they flashed their lights on the car. They then recovered the weapon from the back seat of the car. Police later determined that the weapon was not the one used in Monday's shooting.

Upon further investigation, police discovered car had been stolen earlier that day from North Arlington. Police then arrested Jihad Coles, 27, of Newark and charged him with receiving stolen property, and violations of the state's weapons laws.
