NEWARK - Newark police say they are in the early stages of an investigation into the circumstances that resulted in the shooting of an 11-year-old boy this evening.

Newark police say the shooting happened in the 400 block of South 16th Street. They say the boy was located after Newark's ShotSpotter system detected gunshots.

The boy was taken to UMDNJ with a non-life threatening injury and has since been released, according to officials.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the department's 24-hour Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 877 695-8477 or 877 695-4867.
