Newark police officer hospitalized after shooting fleeing suspect

NEWARK - A Newark police officer is still hospitalized after shooting a fleeing suspect on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the city's south ward.

Details of what happened are still fuzzy, but information given by witnesses and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office brief statement say that police were on a routine patrol on Johnson Avenue when they noticed a man standing beside a car parked in front of an apartment building.

When police approached, the man jumped in his car and drove up the street, dragging the officers toward the dead end. The man was then shot, lost control of his car, jumped the curb and crashed.

The man and the police officer were transported to University Hospital and are in stable condition.
