Newark pitched extra tolls to fix budget woes

NEWARK - Newark's city council briefly threw around the idea of making Route 21 a toll road in order to help the city out of its budget problem.

McCarter Highway, also known as Route 21, is a major North-South Connector that runs through Newark.

The idea was presented in a city council brainstorming session. The city is looking for ways to close the gap on the city's projected $70-80 million deficit.

Under state law, municipalities can't put tolls on state roads. So the city will have to find another way to drive its way out of debt.
