NEWARK - Newark police and city officials gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony today to officially open the city's new police headquarters.
The state-of-the-art, 75,000-square-foot facility is on Clinton Avenue in the city's South Ward. It will house the 5th precinct and the city's Office of Emergency Management, in addition to headquarters operations.
Mayor Cory Booker says the facility features a glass facade and will have a community room which the public will be allowed to use for neighborhood meetings and other events.
The new building also houses a wall of screens designed to allow the mayor and police officials to handle emergency situations. In time, it will also be connected to the city's 800 cameras, allowing officials to see what's going on in any part of town at any time.
