NEWARK - A 61-year-old Newark woman died Monday evening after Newark firefighters pulled her from a burning home.
Nearly 50 firefighters responded to reports of a burning home at 12 Oraton St. around 5:20 p.m. When firefighters got inside, they found a woman in the third-floor apartment in cardiac arrest. The firefighters removed her from the building and then began to perform CPR.
The woman was taken to University Hospital, but died a short time later.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose says the woman did not live at the three-family house. Her identity is being withheld until her family is notified. An autopsy is to be held.
Ambrose commended the firefighter’s efforts. “They risked their lives in an attempt to save a life,” Ambrose said in a statement.
More than nine adults were displaced by the fire. The cause is under investigation.
