NEWARK - Bitter cold temperatures and several snowstorms have prompted the Newark Fire Department to practice its ice rescue skills.

Firefighters from the city’s Special Operations unit gathered at the Boathouse at Branch Brook Park to conduct the training drills.

Crews participating in the drill simulated the rescue of someone who had fallen through the ice.

The units used specialized protective equipment and cameras to help rescue the individual.

City fire officials say much of the equipment was obtained through a federal grant.
