NEWARK - The Newark Fire Department is hosting its annual search and rescue team exercise this week.

The four-day event prepares firefighters from 10 New Jersey fire departments to work together in major events like terrorist attacks or natural disasters.

Newark Fire Battalion Chief Art Mauriello says these kinds of scenarios help keep firefighters prepared. "If you don't train, when the real incident comes in you don't really have your A-game," he says.

This year, the scenario puts electrical and gas company workers in a trench redoing gas lines following an explosion. The first responders will have to save the trapped workers and address the potential hazards of gas leaks.
