Newark, Devils spar over debt

NEWARK - The City of Newark says that the NHL's New Jersey Devils are bailing on their financial commitments to the city, while the team argues the situation is just sour grapes after an arbitrator ruled against Newark.

"The mayor has called me a mensch, a friend for life and has extolled my virtues in dealing with the community over the last five years," Devils Chairman Jeff Vanderbeek told News 12 New Jersey. He says millions of dollars in investments can't be argued with. Newark Mayor Cory Booker appeared on Talk to 12 and spoke about the subject. Booker tells News 12 New Jersey that he's just asking Vanderbeek to follow through, as he said he would.

Booker called the situation with the Devils disheartening. He says he just hopes Vanderbeek will change his mind and follow through with the agreement for the people.
