Newark deals with violent start to 2011

NEWARK - Within the first 24 hours of 2011, two murders were committed in Newark, authorities say.

Police say the first homicide occurred Saturday morning on Delavan Street where Jennifer Riley, 26, was beaten to death. Her boyfriend Carlos Rodriguez is being charged with manslaughter in connection with her death.

The Essex County prosecutor's Office says that hours later a 40-year-old man was stabbed inside Bush Liquors on Tremont Avenue. The owner of the store hopes video from his surveillance cameras can help police catch the killer. Police are still searching for a suspect in the second incident. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Newark police at 973-733-6000.
