NEWARK - The Newark Council is scheduled to vote tomorrow on whether to keep current Police Director Garry McCarthy following a summer filled with violence and scandal.

Murders in Newark spiked this summer and the ACLU demanded the department be placed under federal oversight citing excessive force and false arrest complaints

McCarthy told News 12 New Jersey exclusively that despite Newark's deadliest summer in two decades, shootings are down 40 percent and murders are down 20 percent.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker says he wants McCarthy to stay at his post, but that the decision isn't up to him.
