NEWARK - After its deadliest year since 2007, Newark’s city leaders and mayoral candidates are attempting to solve the ongoing violence that has plagued the city’s streets.

Mayoral candidate Ras Baraka told reporters Sunday that he would like to enact a similar policing campaign to Newark’s Operation Safe Summer. The plan involves taking more police officers from behind desks and deploying them in targeted areas to reduce crime.

“We don't need the summer just to be safe. We need the whole year to be safe,” said Baraka. “When little children are being killed in our streets, we need this to be done urgently and immediately.”

Two teens were killed and another was wounded on Christmas night after gunfire erupted on the 100 block of Schley Street.

Newly appointed Mayor Luis Quintana says he will make a major public safety announcement after the new year.
