NEWARK - City officials are monitoring a building left unstable after a collision with a taxi sent a New Jersey Transit bus into a Newark storefront.

Ten people are in the hospital as a result of the crash at around 12:45 a.m.

Transit officials say the bus was headed for Newark Penn Station when it was struck by the cab at the intersection of Market and Washington streets. The impact carried both vehicles about 90 feet across a median and the bus ended up in the storefront of the old Michael's Furniture building.

Police say the drivers of both vehicles and eight bus passengers were taken to UMDNJ Hospital. The passengers suffered minor injuries while the driver suffered a concussion. The taxi driver's injuries were not life-threatening.

Newark Mayor Louis Quintana says the bus can not be removed from the building without causing it to collapse so crews are working to prevent further damage.

Neighbors say there have been traffic jams throughout the day as more and more people on foot and in cars stopped to grab a photo of the accident.
