Newark airport to get upgrades ahead of 2014 Super Bowl

NEWARK - Newark Liberty International Airport is in line to get upgrades that will help accommodate visitors to the 2014 Super Bowl.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that private jet operator Signature Flight Support will invest $11 million in a new passenger terminal and ramp renovations.

The Port Authority also approved a new first-class lounge for Virgin Atlantic Airlines. It will be part of an ongoing $347 million terminal overhaul. Virgin Atlantic agreed to pay for $3.5 million worth of improvements before the Super Bowl.

The improvements are part of a lease extension agreement that was approved by the Port Authority yesterday. The upgrades are expected to be done in time for the 2014 Super Bowl at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford.

The Port Authority said the changes mean improved access for private plane passengers and economic growth at the airport with the creation of 80 jobs and nearly $15 million in private investment.
