Newark agency helps some homeowners fight foreclosures

NEWARK - A Newark agency that aims to help homeowners fight foreclosures says it's known for more than a year that many financial institutions have a big problem.

New Jersey Citizen Action says bank and loan service companies can't always prove that they own the homes they're trying to take away because of all the documents involved.

Phyllis Salowe-Kaye says that the discovery is "usually made when they get to court with a client, and the judge or mediator will identify the fact that the lender - who is trying to put that person out of their house - does not have ownership of the property."

She says the agency might have prevented more foreclosures if it had the time and resources to dig through all the documents and challenge the lenders.
